What's New
Attached is a new development from Argonne National Laboratory. It is a discussion
and pictures of a neutron rig to be used for source
checks of neutron survey instrumentation.
A change notice has been added to DOE-STD-1098-2008. Section 211, page 2-3, paragraph 1,
a sentence was added: "Approval by the appropriate Secretarial Officer or designee should
be required prior to allowing an individual to exceed 2,000 millirem in a year." This
statement was inadvertently left out of the 2008 revision. It appears in the original
standard DOE-STD-1098-99. Therefore DOE is not adding anything new by this action. This
change merely restores what was deleted. An updated copy of the standard
is available at: http://www.hss.energy.gov/HealthSafety/WSHP/radiation/ts.html
Issuance of Safety Advisory: HS11 staff issued a Safety Advisory entitled, "Use of
Grinding Wheels containing Uranium." This advisory addresses the hazards of using grinding
wheels containing uranium and gives a list of good practices to minimize contamination
and exposure. See http://www.hss.energy.gov/CSA/csp/advisory/SA_2009-01.pdf
Issuance of Technical Standard: HS-11
staff completed a rewrite of technical standard "DOE-STD-1128-2008,
Guide of Good Practices for Occupational Radiological
Protection in Plutonium Facilities." The standard was
rewritten to be consistent with the June 2007 amendment
to 10 CFR 835 "Occupational Radiation Protection" where
the Department updated its methodology for assessing
internal doses from intakes of radioactive material.
The standard is available at: http://www.hss.energy.gov/HealthSafety/WSHP/radiation/ts.html
